Us, January 19, 2020: John, Leo, Shadow, Roy, Ondine

Friday, March 13, 2020

Friday the 13th indeed! Coronavirus (COVID-19) remains the top story, and now most stores are limiting purchases of cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizer. As the virus spreads, it's affecting everyday life in historic ways. It's not all bad: maybe this will put an end to useless meetings, handshakes as a standard greeting, and reluctance to calling in sick. It may even trigger some changes to sick day policies and caregiver day policies in the workplace. But, not only have all our upcoming activities been canceled, including plays, classes, and meetings, but just this afternoon San Diego City Schools announced that it was closing all schools until April 6.

Leo is still trying to play the senior knock-out, but it really seems like it may be over at this point. His team was advancing well, too. But, Patrick Henry is shutting down completely effective this coming Monday, and today he couldn't even turn in his grad night forms at the office.

Earlier this week Leo had a Kaiser appointment, probably his last meeting with Dr. Ireland at the John Richards Center in Clairemont because once he turns 18 he ages out of that system. After the appointment, he and John went to Katsu Cafe for dinner, and the place was practically deserted.

Roy said classes at UCCS are going all-online, and the Ent Center is closed until April 13, so once he comes home for spring break there's really no point in him returning to Colorado until then. He's scheduled to come home next week, although we'll see what happens with domestic travel restrictions. Because classes are all online now, he could return earlier, if flights are available.

Ondine got the Cabi merch she'd bought, and a box of Doterra stuff. She's trying to do as much of her documentation at home instead of remaining in the facilities, but she still has visits to make all over the county.

John is reading Romantic poetry by Coleridge, Shelley and the boys in the band, but he's not sure the literary book club will be meeting next week, or whether he'd go. So now he's thinking of starting another online course, probably the ones he received when he joined the Tudor Society.

We saw Ondine's cousin David last weekend, he stopped by for a visit that started here at our house then moved next door to Barbara's for kaffeetrinken. Also last weekend, we saw a play at Lamplighters Community Theatre in La Mesa, an Agatha Christie mystery called The Hollow. It was, as usual, excellent. Probably our last live play for a while though.

This weekend we had tickets to see Clybourne Park at Grossmont College, and Ondine was going to go paddleboarding with her cousin Anita. But the play has been canceled and Ondine's not sure about visiting. John's been definitely fighting a cold or something, and Leo's freshly recovered, so we'll probably give judo a miss this weekend as well.

So, as of next week, assuming Roy makes it home, we'll have a full house again for nearly a month. Sigh.

Time to start binge-watching Endeavour, Lovejoy, and Tony Robinson's Walking Through History.

Neighborhood gas prices are about $3.59 per gallon.
